Ayurveda - The Science of Life

Ayurveda is an ancient system of natural healing that has its origins in the Vedic culture. More than a mere system of treating illness, Ayurveda is a science of life (Ayur=life, Veda=science or knowledge). It offers a body of wisdom designed to help people stay vital while realizing their full human potential throughout one's life. It provides guidelines on ideal daily and seasonal routines, diet, behaviour and the proper use of our senses. Ayurveda reminds us that health is the balanced and dynamic integration between our environment, food, body and mind.

 

What is the workshop about?

The basic purpose of this workshop is to empower every individual with knowledge about healthy living and to enable the participant to take complete control of our own health. The workshop will encompass the best among the eastern wisdom and western science to make it complete integrated approach to health.

 

This workshop will enable the participant to become aware about the intricate and dynamic connections between food, body, mind & our environment and thus enable us to regain the lost communication between us and our body.  Once we have this simple knowledge about our food and our life-style, it will enable us to keep one healthy without any complicated modern medical system. It is not our destiny that we are sick, but it is our ignorance about right living or not following right lifestyle that makes us sick.

 

The workshop will not only introduce the participants about the concepts of Ayurveda but will also cover details on Panchmahabhoota theory (five element theory), Tri-dosha theory (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), Six taste theory, Digestive fire and food concepts, Daily & Seasonal changes, House-hold remedies, Panchkarma and importance of mental health. This will also enable the participant to make dynamic changes in our food based on our body constitution, environment & will also enable us of ways of "listening to our body".

 

Who should attend the workshop?

This workshop is for anyone who is interested in understanding the various interconnected issues concerning our body, mind, health, environment and food. This workshop is targeted towards people who would like to learn Ayurvedic wisdom and apply the same in one's day to day life and improve on our health. Participants should be diligently interested to take control of their health in their own hands rather than blindly relying on medicines.

 

 

About the facilitator – Dr. Nikhil Mehta

 

Dr. Nikhil Mehta, though an MBBS graduate has been practicing Ayurveda. He has been practicing using the basic principles of Ayurveda with very minimal medicines. His approach is to use the best of the eastern wisdom and western science and to encompass an "integrated" approach to all health issues. At present, along with his private practice at Pune, he is devoting his time in spreading the wisdom of Ayurveda.

 

He strongly believes that our body has the inherent intelligence to correct the imbalance in our health, only if one can learn the art of "listening to our body". The ultimate aim is to increase the sensitivity and awareness about one's own health problems. If one can learn that art, one can take care of most of our health issues. He strongly emphasizes that only each individual can best take care of one's health rather than anyone else. His vision is to make society as independent as possible in understanding health problems. He believes that any common man can learn this "art", verify it on himself and thus master this "art" to enable us to lead a healthy life.

I have put down some thoughts on dowsing as I see it. It is not meant only for healers. Dowsing is widely used by many people and I think it might be to do with some intuition predominent personalities. You dowse because you have some intuition and your intuition increases as you go on dowsing, would be how I see it.:-)

What is Dowsing?
It is a method/ technique to arrive at a better decision, using your inner resources when you have choices that appear all equally good or the opposite. It is method of basing your decision and choices  you make when there is a vast unknown OR tricky area in which you have to make your decision/ choice.
What can you learn in this one-hour (+ or -) learning experiment?
Over the years I have learnt that much (success) depends on how you phrase your questions, the steps you have to go through for arriving at a greater clarity and assumptions on which you do the dowsing. We can take up samples and do this with questions/doubts that you have.
 
My assumptions
The traditional assumption behind dowsing is that your 'conscious mind' has many blocks imposed by values and beliefs that you have been brought up on. The conscious mind follows known patterns of thinking and behaviour. But your 'sub-conscious' mind is free from such block, constraints and compulsions and therefore, in dowsing, you tap your 'sub-conscious' mind for better decision-making.
My belief and assumption for dowsing are different and they are somewhat along these lines:
1. Your sub-conscious mind is a store-house of many experiences  that you could have forgotten due to social, emotional or mental factors in your upbringing. One aspect of dowsing is try and get in touch with the wisdom of your own sub-conscious mind.
2. All of us have spirit guides (guardian angels) who are ready to help us and can be approached when you need to make a decision in an unknown area in an 'original' way.
3. The Akashic records that supposedly store "All Knowledge" should be available to us also for asking with sincerity and earnestness and for a beneficial end.
4. The bane of memory lapse can, to some degree,  be overcome with this technique.
What equipment might you need?
If you have a pendulum, you can use that. Basically, anything long and somewhat heavy (like the gold or silver chain you wear) can be used. You can, like me, attempt dowsing without any equipment. Ofcourse, you will need paper and pen/pencil to write down the choices and questions.

DO'S AND DON'T'S TO KEEP GOOD HEALTH

Follow these traditional and time-tested practices to keep good health and avoid sickness.

+  Have Abhyanga  every day or as frequently as possible : that is, take a few spoons of oil and couple of spoons of salt and rub it all over your body; wait for about 10 minutes and bathe, as usual. Have breakfast after your bath.

+ Drink a glass of boiled and hot water after each meal. Do not drink coffee or tea after eating.

+ Your meals should be simple and cooked fresh everyday. It is better to eat the food traditionally eaten in the family.

+  Eat fruits separately or before the meal.  Eat sweets at the beginning of the meal.

+ Drink enough water to satisfy your thirst and not unnecessarily or excessively.

+ Exercise regularly to keep your body and joints flexible. Maintain the habit of sitting down on the floor.

+ Relax a while eating or drinking water and do not rush or exercise immediately after eating.

+ Keep your mind calm –avoid anger, hatred or excessive worry.

+ It is better to eat only one grain in meal – eitherrice, ragi, jowar or wheat. Do not use multi-grain flour.

x Never eat food from previous day or reheat food and eat.

X  Never use refined oil – read the label on the oil carefully and buy non-refined oil.

X When not well, avoid eating flour products (idli, dosa, bread, chapatti etc,) – eat freshly cooked rice, rasam, kichdi etc.

X Do not eat curds in the night.  Avoid fermented flour products in the night meal.

X Avoid eating outside food as much as possible. Eat freshly made home-made food.

X Minimise eating food not traditionally eaten in your family (eg., oats.). Certainly do not eat them when not well.

X Do not eat too much of raw vegetables. Do not eat them in the night meal or along with fruits.

WATER

COKE

#2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup! (the concentrate) the commercial trucks must use a hazardous Material place cards reserved for highly corrosive materials.
